The 80s Come Alive: Our Lips Are Sealed (The Go-Go’s & Fun Boy Three)

TheGoGos This week in The 80s Come Alive we’re featuring two versions of one song, and no, one of those versions does not feature the sisters Duff.

‘Our Lips Are Sealed’ was written by The Go-Go’s Jane Wiedlin and Fun Boy Three’s Terry Hall (you may remember Hall from a previous 80’s post on The Specials two weeks ago).  The song was a hit on both the American and UK charts when The Go-Go’s released it as the first single from their 1981 album Beauty and the Beat.  The following year, Hall and Fun Boy Three released their slightly moodier take on the song, and it too was a success on the UK charts, although it didn’t have as much impact in the States.

FB3 While The Go-Go’s stick with a basic, more upbeat guitar/bass/drum arrangement, Fun Boy Three relied on an orchestrated approach, with strings, piano, and a syncopated backing vocal line.  I myself prefer the Fun Boy Three ‘Lips’, but you have to love drummer Gina Schock of The Go-Go’s, who besides having a kick-ass name is also fabulous behind the kit.  Also, kudos to Fun Boy Three drummer June Kingston, who also backs singer Terry Hall on the lead vocal.
